14th day - 210 miles

Well finally the rain caught up with me. After almost 2 weeks of nothing but blue sky (and a bit fog yesterday) I woke up today to the sound of rain drops on my window. From the moment I hit the road in Crescent City till I called it quits in Yachats, Oregon it was raining. Not the kind of rain we are used to in Illinois, that heavy downpour like rain, but a constant thick misty rain. Like someone sprays you constantly with a spray bottle. At times I had to drive through fog like clouds with visibilities less than 15 yards. Not something you want to experience driving on a coastal road with cliffs and plenty of turns. Needless to say, that this day did not provide for a lot of photo opportunities. Too bad! Because the scenery, even though shrouded in rain clouds and fog, was quite spectacular.
Offshore cliffs and rock pillars that reach out of the water, similar to the northern Californian coast, but larger and vast beaches with black volcanic sand where deep river valleys open towards the sea with lots of driftwood deposits. Very memorable were the numerous bridges that line Highway 101 crossing those rivers. After researching it on the net I discovered that most of them were designed by Conde B. McCullough a bridge designer of the 20's & 30's. Please check out the link below that opens a PDF about McCullough. Very interesting!
The weather reports look mixed for tomorrow. Let’s hope!

  1. pitty about the weather! Would have been nice to see some of this coast line. We have a great coastline in Victoria called "The Great Ocean Road", i just imagine it would be like that but a bit more spectacular! Keep up the save driving!
