19th day - 503 miles

I’m standing in the middle of the Northern Rocky Mountains, Bill Curtis, and guess what I don’t find? The internet! So sorry for the delay, but I assume more will be coming as cell phone towers and internet access are getting sparse. The day started out with a nice ride up the scenic Peace River Valley. Two hours later I finally made it to the Alaskan Highway. But high expectations were dampened at first as the next 300 miles were nothing but straight road with little change of scenery. After Fort Nelson I got more than reimbursed. Entering into the Northern Rockies it would be an understatement to say that the scenery changed drastically. Steep mountains and crystal clear lakes lined the road that twisted through the valleys. And lots of wild life! Everything from Elk & Moose, to Mountain Sheep and even Black Bears were taking advantage of the greens that could be found on the side of the road. The day ended at Liard River Hot Springs, a provincial park that hosts two natural pools fed by thermal springs. Because it does not get really dark anymore this far north me and my new found motorcycle buddy Lorenz, from Switzerland, soothed our soar behinds in the hot spring until 3:00am in the morning. Wonderful!!

Moberly Lake in the morning.

Even though the colors are beautiful - all the brown is caused by beetles that killed all pine trees in the area.

Peace River Canyon Dam.

Peace River Canyon.

Almost...

Last view into the Peace River Valley.

Sun and dry pavement in front of me, while I'm standing in the rain.

The first 300 miles of the Alaskan Highway. I'm getting tired...

Typical gas stop.

"You think that's funny?"

His & and Hers.

..but friendlier inside!

Does it ever end..

Ominous clouds over Fort Nelson.

First black bear! Of many more to come...

Finally blue sky again.

First moose...

Entering into Stone Mountain Provincial Park..
Summit Lake.

"What are you looking at? Never see mountain Sheep?"

More picture of the park...
Bigger moose!

Muncho Lake.

You gotta be kidding me...

Who would have thought..

  1. Hi Matthias, instead of buffaloes, I watched soccer, similar effect, since germany creamed australia 4-0! Good start for FIFA 2010. Whats on the menue there? Buffalo burger, goatstew, elkroast? Everything looks absolutely spectacular and it is an adventure you will remember for a lifetime. We on the other hand will share it through your eyes and camera. Keep up the good work. Talked to Mom today and she is going to view your trip at Daniela's this coming week. Stay save, bis bald, Regina

  2. We were stopped by buffalo crossing the roads in South Dakota and Yellowstone. Did you have to wait a long time? They're never in a hurry.

  3. Matthias, I hope you are yielding the right of way to these animals. The look on Bigger Moose's face would have made me turn the motorcycle around! It actually gives me hope that there are still wild animals in the wild, unfortunately you have to drive 500 miles in a day to see them. o.k., maybe it is fortunate for them. Stone Mountain Park is aptly named. thanks for letting us tag along on your trip. LOVE IT!!! Keith and Kirsten
